American Idol 9: The Finale

Wednesday night was Simon Cowell’s last moment with American Idol, and the night belonged to him much more than the two contenders for the ninth Idol crown. and performed ably on Tuesday night, but only the votes would determine which would walk away with the winning title. The show will undoubtedly crash and burn now that Cowell is walking away…but that is talk for another time.

The Top 12 Idols - including Crystal and Lee, of course - danced out on stage to deliver “School’s Out for Summer.” While Orianthi jammed out on the guitar, Casey James suddenly announced a surprise appearance - Alice Cooper. This was an exciting guest star, but honestly, he sounded quite bad. And I’m a fan.

The evening started out with a fairly lackluster vibe…but there was much, much more to come.

Is Paula Abdul Going Back to American Idol?

Paula Abdul is reporting that American Idol is again romancing ex-judge Paula Abdul. Once the lone female on the judging panel, Abdul failed to come to a contractual agreement with Idol over the summer. She was replaced on the panel by comedienne Ellen DeGeneres, who has failed to deliver little more than odd comparisons and one-liners on the singing show.

According to an unnamed source quoted by the mag, Paula is currently talking to producers about her return. Ratings for the reality hit have been down this year (it’s getting beat by Dancing With the Stars on ABC), and the show is scrambling to save itself in the face of Simon Cowell’s imminent departure. Is the answer to lifting the flagging sails on the Idol ship?

Quote of the Day: Nigel Lythgoe No Longer Wants Paula Abdul’s Help

Paula Abdul and Nigel Lythgoe

“No. I spent an entire season wooing her and if she was ever going to do it, she would have. The timing was perfect for her and I was rather shocked she didn’t pick up and join us at any point. I mean, Katie Holmes was there, Jennifer Lopez was there. I know we don’t have Idol money and so does Paula, but at the end of the day I do plenty of things for no money because I want to support dance. And as an dancer/performer/choreographer, I would have thought she’d like to support us.”

-Former American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe claiming he won’t continue pursuing for So You Think You Can Dance.

Star Search Logo

UPDATE: say that Paula’s deal with ABC has failed to come to fruition. Perhaps she’ll make it to X-Factor with Simon Cowell after all!

New rumors suggest that all the old rumors are untrue: won’t be doing X-Factor after all. Gossip says that Abdul is currently in talks with ABC to host a new version of Star Search, which is being newly re-vamped for television. The series ran for 12 years (1983-95) with Ed McMahon at the helm.

Here’s the thing: Star Search has been re-vamped before. CBS did it in 2003 in an effort to compete with American Idol (the plan didn’t work). Arsenio Hall was the host, and it was canceled after only two seasons. In fact, CBS still has their official up for the series.

Ellen DeGeneres: From Funny Girl to Reality TV Diva

Behind-the-scenes gossip at American Idol suggests that newest judge is making her presence felt in the form of outlandish demands and threats. And she seems so nice when the cameras are rolling.

Rumor has it that DeGeneres is asking for a clothing allowance of $150,000 for custom-made items to be worn on camera. According to an unnamed rumormonger, “Ellen feels it’s only fair because Paula [Abdul] received a hefty allowance for hair, makeup and wardrobe.”
